Job Summary

Gulliver Prep’s Upper School Campus is seeking to hire a College Counselor for the upcoming 2024-25 school year. The School and College Counseling team has extensive college counseling and college admissions experience, and this position will represent an important addition to a highly collaborative team. At Gulliver Prep, College Counselors are responsible for advising and guiding a diverse group of students and their families in finding and applying to colleges that match students’ academic profiles, are aligned with personal goals, and where they will thrive and achieve. The Upper School College Counselor reports directly to the Upper School Director of School and College Counseling and shares student-support responsibilities with Mental Health Counselors, Academic Advisors, and faculty advisors.

In alignment and support of the vision, values, and mission of Gulliver Preparatory School, the Upper School College Counselor will:

  • Proactively create and develop positive relationships with all school community members (students, families, teachers, administrators, and staff). 
  • Meet with parents and guardians of students in assigned caseload (approximately 30 students per grade, 10-12) to discuss student progress and to determine priorities for the students and their academic needs and goals.
  • Confer with teachers, other college counselors, mental health counselors, and administrators to discuss assigned students’ needs and progress. 
  • Support students in grades 10-11 with pre-college advising, including Advanced Placement (AP) and International Baccalaureate (IB) course selection to meet academic requirements for college admission, thoughtful extracurricular engagement, advise on and write recommendation letters for summer programs, conduct quarterly review of students’ academic progress, serve as liaison between faculty and family concerning students’ academic performance, and conduct annual student-transcript review to ensure students meet graduation requirements, and other appropriate or needed components of academic, well-being, and pre-college advising.
  • Guide students in grades 11-12 through all aspects of the college application process, including college list development, athletic recruitment advisement, creation and completion of college applications, essay development and refinement, and submission of applications.
  • Responsible for writing a detailed and persuasive college counselor’s recommendation letter in support of each Grade 12 student in their caseload.
  • Attend weekly department meetings, assist in developing pre-college and college advising programming, teach college advising workshops and seminars, and participate in department programming events during and outside of regular school hours, including evening events for families and overnight college tour program.
  • Collaborate with the college counseling team to maintain and update handbooks, handouts, digital newsletters, and the annually updated Upper School Profile. 
  • As assigned by the Director of School and College Counseling, professionally represent Gulliver Prep at relevant state and national college counseling conferences and workshops, as well as visit colleges and universities, to remain current on college admission trends impacting Gulliver Prep’s college counseling program and to deepen and expand knowledge of school options.
  • Establish positive working relationships with college admission offices, ensuring they are familiar with Gulliver Preparatory School, specifically, and to advocate on behalf of students to facilitate the admissions process. 
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the Upper School Director of School and College Counseling and the Upper School Principal.

 

Desired Skills and Qualifications

  • Excellent written and oral communication skills, including public speaking in small and large groups.
  • Highly collaborative, dynamic individual with the ability to manage diverse professional relationships with various stakeholders.
  • Strong digital literacy, including Microsoft Office and Google Suite. Experience with Veracross and Maia Learning is highly desirable.
  • Ability to take initiative, prioritize tasks, and work independently with attention to detail, accuracy, and established protocols.
  • Demonstrated flexibility, adaptability, perseverance, maturity, and ability to juggle competing priorities.
  • Skilled in creatively and thoughtfully collaborating with diverse constituent groups.   

 

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s Degree in related field; Master’s Degree preferred. 
  • Minimum of three (3) years’ experience in college admission and/or college counseling in an academically rigorous school.

 

Pre-Employment Requirements

Criminal Background Check, Level II Fingerprint Screening(s), and Drug screen.
